Holiday Stain Guide
Holiday time means more people in your home, more cooking, and more partying. It stands to reason that at this time of year, cleaning clothes becomes serious business, as stains seem to multiply from a variety of sources. Here are the some common stain situations that occur at this time of year and some easy ways to fight the good fight. Remember, most of these tips apply only to home laundered items; anything that needs to be dry-cleaned should be brought to us right away.
1. Meat juices. React quickly, since dried meat juice is very tough to get rid of. First, sponge the area immediately with cold water or club soda. Then apply meat tenderizer and cold water, mixing it in well. Let the garment sit for a half an hour to 60 minutes. Pretreat and launder in cool water.
2. Perfume. Rushing to get to the party and spritzed on your clothes? First, wed like to advise you to put on these products BEFORE getting dressed. Never spray perfume directly on your clothes, since the combination of alcohol and oil can really do a number on just about any fabric. If you do run into this problem, however, just follow the instructions below for removing stains from alcoholic beverages.
3. Alcoholic beverages. This type of stain turns brown with age, so its vital to treat immediately. Flush the area with cold water or club soda, then sponge with a cloth lightly dampened with warm water and a couple of drops of liquid dish soap. Rinse with cool water and dry area with a hair dryer. Once alcohol oxidizes with heat and age, it becomes impossible to remove. Beer stains? Sponge with equal parts of white vinegar and dishwashing liquid, then rinse in warm water.
4. Candy. Sweet but long lasting if you dont get the stain out! Combine one tablespoon of liquid dish soap with one tablespoon of white vinegar and one quart of warm water. Soak the stain for about 30 minutes, then flush with warm, clear water. Pretreat and launder according to care instructions.
Home Laundry Tip
Most people say they love the feel of crisp, cool sheets, but at this time of year, theres nothing more enjoyable than the warm and comforting feel of flannel sheets and pillowcases!
We do have several tips to keep those sheets in tip-top shape. First, be sure to wash flannel sheets separately from other fabrics in warm water before using them for the first time. Then, since flannel sheets are huge lint collectors, rinse them with warm water and one cup white vinegar. When drying flannel sheets, especially after their first few uses, be sure your dryers lint filter is cleaned out.
