Clothing Stains - Proteins
We all know it’s best to treat stains as soon as possible to avoid having it set permanently. (And of course, if the garment is labeled “dry clean only” we want you to bring it to us as soon as possible; don’t try to treat it yourself!)
For washable fabrics, however, knowing what caused the stain will help you determine how best to treat it. This month we’re going to talk about protein stains, which include stains caused by milk and dairy products (cheeses, ice cream, etc.), eggs, bodily products (everything from perspiration to vomit) and even white glue.
For these types of stains, your first line of attack is to soak the stain in cold water as soon as possible. You can add mild soap, shampoo or dishwashing liquid and rub gently. Then wash the item in warm, not hot water (remember, heat will set the stain since in a sense you will be “cooking” the protein and it will get into the yarns of the fabric, making it difficult, if not impossible, to remove).
If the stain comes out completely, great: you can then dry it in the machine. If not, try re-soaking for another half an hour, rub and rewash (older stains will need to have the excess material scraped off and soaked for longer, possibly as long as several hours). Sometimes using bleach helps, but be sure to color test first. If that doesn’t work, try working together a paste of baking soda and water into the stain.
