Stains from Dyes

Dye-based stains--including everything from color bleeding in the wash to felt-tip pen, tempera paint, cherries or blueberries to grass and drink mixes—are VERY hard to remove. Having said that, your best shot is to wash the item in hot water with detergent and bleach if it’s safe for the fabric, check the label first!

Start by pre-treating the dye stain with detergent and then rinse. Soak the garment in a solution of all-fabric powdered bleach diluted with water. If you’ve got marker stains, try rubbing with some isopropyl alcohol and then flush with hot water; this may remove or at least lighten the stain. If this doesn’t work, you can try soaking the entire item in chlorine bleach and water (be sure the garment is either white or colorfast). If you don’t see improvement in 15 minutes, it’s a lost cause; further bleaching will only cause fabric damage.
